In the petrochemical industry the commonly low surface tensions / interfacial tensions of the chemicals mean the integrity of a multi liquid system is dependent on the interfacial properties of the components within the manufactured formulation. Their component interactions can be measured by contact angle methods.  Bulk chemical analysis can be carried out by FTIR and surface chemical analysis by XPS.
